Best Science Images 2008

The best science images for 2008 have been announced, and the winner is:

 

It was taken using an electron microscope, and shows diatoms, a form of eukaryotic algae, attaching themselves to some marine structure. Taken by Mario De Stefano.

This picture shows an array of suckers found on the tentacles of a long-finned squid. It was taken by Jessica Schiffman and was awarded an honorable mention. 

Now this one is pretty cool. It’s not a picture per se, but an illustration of the bible. Each chapter is plotted along the horizontal axis at the bottom of the image, with each bar’s length determined by the number of verses. The arcs show the 63,779 cross-references between each chapter. Honorable mention awarded to Chris Harrison and Christoph Romhild.
