15-Minute Diagnosis

Scientists have developed a method for diagnosing certain diseases similar to that of a pregnancy test.

A team of scientists at the University of Leeds have created biosensor technology that uses antibodies to detect specific biomarkers that are associated with specific diseases. Among the diseases mentioned are prostate and ovarian cancer, stroke, multiple sclerosis, heart disease and fungal infections, and they speculate that their technique also can be applied to infections such as HIV and tubercolosis. Even though they have yet to do so, the scientists believe the technology can be scaled down to point where it can fit inside a mobile-sized, hand-held device.

The study was part of the european ELISHA project.
