The 13 million-digit prime

The Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search (or GIMPS) just found a prime number with 13 million digits. The prime is 243,112,609-1, and comparatively the number of atoms in the visible universe is estimated to be about 1080. So it’s pretty ginormous… They found it by getting people to volunteer their CPU power when their computers would otherwise be idle, and combined the total combined processing power equals that of one of the largest supecomputers in the world. Pretty cool….
